Unfortunately, decay happens to those with even the best oral hygiene, but what can be done if tooth filling cannot be avoided? Did you know that there are several types of fillings? In this post, you can read about the dentures that are made by a dental technician, not by your dentist (during treatment). These fillings are inlays and onlays!
By the phrasing “filling”, the majority of people mean “getting a filling” after a drilling of teeth, but there are several other solutions to filling up the teeth, such as inlay and onlay fillings. These special fillings are different from conventional fillings, they are not made by the dentist, but by a dental technician in a lab.
Inlay/onlay fillingsmay be the easiest thing to imagine as deposits, as they are actually that. Following the cleansing of the teeth with cavities, the dentist takes the impression of the cavity and forwards it to the dental technicians. On the basis of the sample, they make a precise sized, personalized insert for the drilled out tooth (while a temporary filling is put in the drilled tooth). For inlay and onlay tooth fillings too, it is important that they are made by qualified professionals. It is important that the tooth impression is taken by the dentist, as the inlay is created based on this. The dental technicians are no less responsible for ensuring the inlay is made with precision so that it is able to fill and close the tooth properly. If the cavity has a large area and so after the cleaning a large hole is formed, where conventional fillers are difficult to apply or not at all possible to apply. The fillings cannot be securely fixed in large holes, gaps may form or the fillings may even fall out from the teeth. Since modern (but conventional) fillings are specifically solidified by exposure to light, large amounts of filler material may shrink the filling, so the dental closure of the edge will not be complete. Such small gaps can easily lead to further decaying of teeth.
In some cases, conventional filling is not recommended if the filling cannot provide enough strength to the tooth, or the cavity was simply too deep with proximity of the tooth root causing extra sensitivity.
There is a small difference between the two filling types. The inlay fillings are placed inside the tooth, the onlay dentures are also inside the tooth, but they are in contact with the chewing surface of the tooth as well. If there is a large amount of caries or the inlay filling cannot be secured safely enough, an onlay filling is applied. The edge of the tooth may need to be surrounded, then an overlay filling is used.
The dentists of Dentys work exclusively with the latest and safest materials, and this is the case for our dental technicians too! At Dentys dentistry, the following inlay/onlay fillings are available:
So, in short, the inlay and onlay tooth fillings are special fillings made by dental technicians based on the dentist’s teeth impression. These “inserts” are fixed in the tooth, and their material can be of several types: special composite (gradia), ceramic, gold or press ceramic.
